What makes it different
The A220 began life as the Bombardier CSeries: a clean-sheet design with geared turbofans, a composite wing, and a cabin so quiet and roomy that passengers noticed. It was the right aircraft — and it nearly destroyed its maker, because the development cost was ruinous and a US trade dispute threatened crushing tariffs.
Airbus took a majority stake for one dollar in 2018, moved production out of tariff reach, and renamed it. The aircraft that almost bankrupted Bombardier is now one of Airbus's most in-demand products.
It fills the gap below the A320 with genuine long legs — the A220-300 can fly 6,297 km, enough to cross the Atlantic on thin routes that a bigger jet could never fill.
