The story so far

Vickers-Armstrongs built the Viscount, the world's first turboprop airliner, and then the VC10: four engines on the tail, a huge clean wing, and short-field performance designed for hot, high runways that American jets could not use.

Only 54 were built and it never made money, but it still holds the record for the fastest subsonic crossing of the Atlantic by a jet airliner — five hours and one minute, set in 1979 and never beaten. Vickers became part of the British Aircraft Corporation in 1960.
