What makes it different
The 777X is built around two extremes. The first is the GE9X — the largest jet engine ever made, its fan wider than an entire 737 fuselage. The second is a carbon-fibre wing so long that it wouldn't fit existing airport gates, so Boeing did something no airliner has done before: the outer 3.5 metres of each wingtip folds upward after landing, shrinking the 71.75-metre flying wingspan to 64.85 metres at the gate.
At 76.72 metres, the 777-9 will take the "longest airliner ever" title the moment it enters service — passing the 747-8 by less than half a metre. It's the 777-300ER's successor and the A350-1000's direct rival: around 426 seats in two classes, a quieter and much more efficient cabin, and the widest windows Boeing has fitted.
The programme has become famous for its delays — first flight was January 2020, and certification has slipped repeatedly, with deliveries now expected in 2027. The order book hasn't blinked: over 500 aircraft, led by Emirates' enormous commitment, with Lufthansa set to be the launch operator. A shorter ultra-long-range 777-8 and a freighter 777-8F follow.
