The story so far
Ilyushin's aircraft were designed for a country of vast distances and rough airfields, and it shows in every one of them: robust landing gear, high wings, ramps, and a tolerance for conditions that would ground more delicate machines.
The Il-62 gave the Soviet Union its first intercontinental jet, the Il-86 its first widebody, and the Il-96 its four-engine flagship. The Il-76, first flown in 1971 and still in production today, is the most-produced heavy airlifter in history — the workhorse that shows up wherever something big has to be moved.
