What makes it different
The 767 changed the map more than almost any aircraft: it was the type that proved twin-engine jets could safely cross oceans, pioneering the ETOPS rules in the 1980s that every modern twin now flies under. Before the 767, crossing the Atlantic meant three or four engines; within a decade, it mostly meant a 767.
Its second act is freight. The passenger fleets are ageing out, but the 767-300F remains the world's default medium freighter — FedEx alone flies well over a hundred — and the line in Everett is still building them, plus the KC-46 Pegasus tanker for the US Air Force, more than four decades after first flight.
The stretched 767-400ER of 1999, at 61.37 metres with its raked wingtips, is the family's longest and rarest — only Delta and United ever bought it.
