The story so far

The Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China was created in 2008 with a single strategic goal: end China's dependence on Boeing and Airbus. It is state-owned, state-funded, and working to a timescale measured in decades rather than quarters.

Its C919 narrowbody entered service in 2023 and is now flying paying passengers on Chinese domestic routes. Production is still small and many key systems are Western-supplied, but with the world's largest aviation market at home, COMAC is the first credible third player in fifty years.
