The story

What makes it different

For fifty years, a large airliner meant Boeing or Airbus. The C919 is China's attempt to make that a three-horse race: a 164-seat narrowbody aimed squarely at the 737 and the A320, first flown in 2017 and carrying fare-paying passengers since 2023.

How independent it really is remains the central question — the LEAP-1C engines, avionics and many key systems are Western-supplied. What is certain is the scale of the order book: well over a thousand commitments, almost all from Chinese carriers, giving the aircraft one of the largest backlogs of any new airliner.

Production is still measured in dozens, not hundreds, and it holds no Western certification, so it flies domestic Chinese routes. But with the world's largest aviation market as a captive customer, it does not need anyone else's permission to matter.
