The story

What makes it different

Embraer built the third-largest commercial aircraft business in the world by owning a market Boeing and Airbus did not want: jets for 70 to 140 people, on routes too thin for a 737. The original E-Jets sold over 1,700; the E2 generation re-engined them with geared turbofans and a new wing.

The E195-E2 is the biggest of them — 41.5 metres long, carrying up to 146 people, and burning notably less fuel per seat than anything in its class. Airlines that once flew it as a feeder now fly it on real routes.

Boeing tried to buy the commercial division outright in 2019. The deal collapsed during the pandemic, and Embraer stayed independent — which, given how the last decade went for Boeing, looks like a lucky escape.
