What makes it different
Concorde cruised at Mach 2.04 — faster than a rifle bullet — at 60,000 feet, where passengers could see the curvature of the Earth. London to New York took under three and a half hours; the record was 2 hours 52 minutes. It flew faster than the sun moves: leave London at 10:30, land in New York at 9:20 the same morning.
It was an Anglo-French engineering triumph and a commercial failure — sonic booms banned it from land routes, the 1970s oil shock killed every order, and only the two national airlines ever flew the fourteen production aircraft. The airframe stretched 15–25 cm in flight from skin heating; the nose drooped for landing so pilots could see the runway.
The Paris crash of July 2000 broke the spell, and both fleets retired in October 2003. More than two decades on, nothing has replaced it: crossing the Atlantic takes twice as long today as it did in 1996. Every surviving Concorde is a museum piece, and they still draw the biggest crowds.
