What it means

The category, explained

Only two supersonic airliners have ever carried fare-paying passengers: Concorde and the Tupolev Tu-144. Both were slender deltas with afterburning engines, both flew at roughly twice the speed of sound, and both were commercial failures.

Concorde crossed the Atlantic in under three hours and retired in 2003. More than two decades later, nothing has replaced it — the same journey takes twice as long today as it did in 1996.
