The story so far

Bristol built aircraft and engines at Filton for most of the twentieth century, but its most famous project was also its greatest miscalculation: the Brabazon, a 70-metre-span luxury airliner designed to carry 100 passengers across the Atlantic in ocean-liner comfort.

No airline ever ordered it, and the prototype was scrapped in 1953. The vast assembly hall and extended runway built for it were not wasted, though, a decade later, they built Concorde.
