The story so far
No manufacturer owns the very top of the size charts like Antonov. Founded in 1946 as a Soviet design bureau and headquartered in Kyiv, USSR, it specialised in heavy lift: rugged, ramp-loading transports that could take enormous payloads out of unpaved strips.
Its lineage climbs relentlessly. The An-22 of 1965 remains the largest turboprop ever built. The An-124 became the largest production cargo aircraft in the world. And the An-225, built as a single aircraft to carry a space shuttle, was the longest and heaviest aircraft ever flown — records that still stand today.
